Aperture Foundation's mission since 1952 has been to champion fine photography. The not-for-profit organization was founded by photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall.
Aperture Foundation publishes a quarterly magazine (Aperture), acclaimed books, and limited edition photograph portfolios. Aperture also has a thriving traveling exhibitions arm, its own 3,000 square foot gallery, and a premier educational program, presenting lectures and panel discussions throughout the year.

The Black Panthers: Making Sense of History

Coinciding with the exhibition at the Odegaard Library at the University of Washington, a panel discussion and gallery tour will be held on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary Reunion and Commemoration gathering of The Black Panther Party, Seattle chapter.

During the height of the Civil Rights movement, from 1967 to 1973, photographer Stephen Shames had unprecedented access to The Black Panther Party and captured not only its public face—street demonstrations, protests, and militant armed posturing—but also unscripted behind-the-scenes moments, from private Party meetings held in its headquarters to Bobby Seale at work on his mayoral campaign in Oakland. Shames’s work offers an uncommonly nuanced portrait of this dynamic social movement, during one of the most tumultuous periods in U.S. history. The Black Panthers was published by Aperture in the fall of 2006.
