Now up on YouTube: video of Danielle Levitt's lecture from November 13, 2007.

Parsons presented this talk at Aperture's gallery in Chelsea. Levitt’s distinctive approach to representing pop culture has gained a wide following in both the fashion and art worlds.

In the first clip, Levitt discusses her first job, and the beginnings of her signature style.  In the second, she discusses her motivations for photographing "ordinary" people.

The second video clip of Shaolin master Shi De Chao has been uploaded to Aperture's YouTube channel:

In this clip, the master performs a form called the monk spade.  Justin Guariglia (Shaolin: Temple Of Zen, Aperture, 2007) discusses the true nature of the practice, and explains the difference between these movements, and what you might see in a kung fu movie or more commercial exhibition.  The Shaolin: Temple of Zen microsite has information, a sneak peek of the book, and more original video.  Visit the microsite...

On October 17th, 2007, Aperture joined with Chelsea's Rubin Museum of Art to promote the Aperture book Shaolin: Temple of Zen.  Its photographer, Justin Guariglia, slowly but surely won the trust of the notoriously secretive warrior monks of the Shaolin Temple over a period of eight years.  That night, he presented Shaolin monk Shi De Chao, who demonstrated the martial art of Shaolin kung fu to the captivated crowd.

Over the next few days, Exposures will present video from that night.  Today, some words from Michelle Dunn, Aperture's deputy director, and Justin Guariglia, along with photos taken by Aperture's Rich Hendricks.  Click on the "Read Full Entry" link below for more.

"In some cases, I certainly couldn’t go to photograph that; the timing was off, and just in going to Iraq, I couldn’t have gone earlier, and I certainly wouldn’t go today."

"I did one singular image... which I thought was pure Josef K. Kafka."

"To put a Montessori circle at the beginning of a book... and a death chamber, a lethal injection chamber, at the end, is something... a little more interesting than the usual photography."
